Team Social - Engaging Audiences Across FSU

TEAM SOCIAL - PROGRESS REPORT 2

Over the past three weeks, the Social Team has continued to expand Launch the Torch throughout campus via social media, our website and word of mouth. We have continued to post on our three main social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Furthermore, we have continued to develop and add content to the website. Partnering with Florida State University's College of Communication and Information (CCI) has been a great resource for increasing our awareness to large audiences. Florida State CCI created a Facebook event page and SnapChat geofilter for our Launch Party. The Social Team was able to use these tools, and share the event page with their personal networks. All visitors at the Launch Party received a flyer with information on the opportunity to track the launch by following our twitter account. A live Twitter feed, along with Facebook posts kept audiences updated on the Launch Party, and the class' progress with tracking down and capturing the weather balloon once it landed. Furthermore, another contact from the Florida State school of Communication had the FSU twitter account retweet all of our tweets throughout the launch – which further spread Launch the Torch throughout campus.

One challenge Team Social was able to overcome was creating a SnapChat geofilter for the Launch Party. Since no members of Team Social had the programs required to create a geofilter, we reached out to Kate Mullen, who works with Florida State University’s CCI. Mullen was a great asset, as she helped us create a geofilter design, and sent it to get it approved by SnapChat. Students and visitors alike enjoyed using this geofilter throughout our Launch Party. There were a few challenges the Social Team faced in regards to the launch, especially since only one member of our team was able to attend this event. This one member had to complete several tasks simultaneously, such as updating a live twitter feed, taking photos and videos, and posting on our other social media accounts. In regards to the twitter feed, this member had to constantly track the location of the payload and relay this information to our twitter audience. If one or two other members attended the launch, these problems would have been lessened or avoided.

In terms of looking forward, the Social Team is excited to keep audiences posted of our launch footage via social media and website. We aim to inform audiences of our accomplishments, and build excitement around Florida State being “launched” to new heights. A new blog post and photo album will be added to the website to ignite the excitement for the success of the launch. Once the Team Video puts together a video of the launch footage, Team Social will post it to all social media platforms, the website and YouTube. Additionally, launch photos and other short videos will be posted to give audiences sneak peeks of our launch. Our goal is to continue the trend of increasing awareness and expanding audiences for Launch the Torch.
